Cristie Kerr

05 July 2007

Cristie Kerr posted a final round of 70 to win the Women’s US Open and deny world number one Lorena Ochoa another shot at major championship glory.

Kerr won on five-under par 279 to claim her 10th LPGA title and her first major. Ochoa, who carded a 71, and Brazil’s Angela Park, who birdied the last for a 70, finished tied for second two shots behind on three-under.

Ochoa was tied with Kerr with five holes to play, but fell behind to a birdie at the 14th before contributing to her own downfall with a poor tee shot at the 17th where her drive hit a tree and dropped into a bunker.

Going for broke from the sand with a wood, she went on to card a bogey five.

“It was definitely my day and this is a dream come true. I made an unbelievable putt at the 14th (from 18-feet for birdie) and I couldn’t be happier,” said Kerr.
